The County Government of Turkana, in collaboration with The Turkana Pastoralist Development Organization (TUPADO) and Wetlands International, has successfully drilled a new borehole in Naipa, situated within Kangatotha Ward of Turkana Central.

County Chief Officer for Water Services, David Maraka, announced that the borehole, with a depth of 80 meters, has been established to cater to the water needs of the Naipa Community.

This initiative comes hot on the heels of the World Water Day 2024 commemoration at Kakuma graced by the Turkana’s political class led by H.E. Governor Jeremiah Lomorukai.

“The mobilization of our rig to Naipa commenced just two days ago; today, we proudly confirm reaching the water table. This development ensures a new water source for the area,” stated Chief Officer Maraka.

The borehole has been completed and is currently undergoing test pumping and water quality assessments, slated for conclusion on Monday, March 25, 2024.

Chief Maraka revealed the department’s ambition to finalize the drilling of up to 15 boreholes before the conclusion of the 2023–2024 financial year, aligning with the allocated budget.

Once operational, the new borehole is anticipated to benefit over 100 households and numerous livestock within the Akou Akaal community area of Naipa, Kangatotha Ward, Turkana Central.

During the World Water Day celebrations, the County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Water Services, Faith Aletea, outlined plans to intensify borehole drilling and rehabilitation efforts, aiming to enhance water accessibility for the local populace.
