County Health officers have concluded a four-day activity of health promotion ahead of distribution of Non-Food Items (NFIs) targeting flood-affected areas of Nareng’woi, Todonyang’, and Lowareng’ak in Lakezone Ward.
The NFI’s distribution program, implemented by Welthungerhilfe (WHH) will support the community in early recovery from the imminent outbreaks of Water and Sanitation Hygiene (WASH) related diseases from the recent flash floods.
In his remarks, County Health Emergency, Preparedness, and Response Coordinator James Ekamais said that sensitizing the communities on health promotion as WASH interventions is essential in enabling the community to practice good hygiene.
“The Non-food Items will go a long way in protecting the community from emerging illness caused by poor hygiene practices in the area during the recent flash floods,” he said.
Public Health Officer for Food Quality Control and Law Enforcement Sammy Kipketton expressed optimism that the NFI’s will eliminate fears of cholera outbreak as it will promote clean, and safe water to the affected communities.
The Welthungerhilfe Field Officer, Jonathan En’gor, outlined that the ongoing emergency flood response project funded by UNICEF began in March this year and will run until August, adding that it poses to cushion vulnerable flood victims from hygiene risks.
Daniel Lokiriama – MoH (Turkana North), Evans Emuria -Sub County Public Health Officer (Turkana North), Peter Mwangi – Deputy County Commissioner (Turkana North), Community Health Promoters and Local Administrators from Lakezone Ward were present at the meeting.
