Lodwar, July 4th 2023 (Public Communication and Media Relations)

The County Government of Turkana is in a significant progress to establish the first database in Turkana, meant to support Persons With Disabilities (PWDs). This follows an ongoing data collection process across Turkana that was jointly done by the County Government and its partners UNHCR, Kenya National Chambers of Commerce and Industry, Humanity and Inclusion.

After the data collection process completes, the data will be validated in September, 2024.

Speaking after the briefing, the County Executive for Education Sports and Social Protection, Elizabeth Loote said, “establishment of a database for PWDs will serve as a critical reference point for policy making and resource allocation.”

According to her, the approach will be expected to enhance the county’s ability to effectively address the needs of persons with Disabilities.

During the meeting, it was revealed data collection exercise started in Turkana North with intentions to extend to other sub counties.

The Chief Officer for Education and Social Protection, Etelej Korea, emphasised the importance of including Ward and Village level data collection approaches to ensure the most marginalised groups are well captured in the database.

He said the collaborative effort on data collection and an opportunity to review and validate data is a show of county’s commitment to inclusivity.

The meeting was also attended by Director of Social Protection, Mark Amiyo and Deputy Director Ignatius Idoka who jointly called for community leadership to ensure all persons with disabilities were registered.
