Turkana County, in collaboration with the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ) and Turkana University College (TUC), has successfully conducted a five-day workshop aimed at enhancing the skills of government officers in renewable energy technologies.
The initiative was set to address the human resource gap in the county’s energy sector by equipping officers with the relevant skills for tapping into the renewable energy outcomes.
With a focus on Fundamentals of Renewable Energy Technologies (FRETS), supported by GIZ- led Energy Solutions for Displacement Settings (ESDS), in a bid to address critical competency gaps among the officer.
During the workshop opening, County Executive for Tourism, Culture, Natural Resource, and Climate Change, Audan Leah Lokala, emphasized the critical role of knowledge transfer by the Turkana University College.
“We are appreciate Turkana University College for their commitment to enhancing the skills of our county staff in renewable energy technologies. This partnership is vital for our development agenda,” CECM Audan said.
As the workshop concluded, it was clear that the trained officers would play a crucial role in the county’s efforts to improve service delivery in the energy sector.
The skills acquired through this training are expected to bridge the human resource gap, enabling the county to meet the increasing demands for energy services efficiently and effectively.
The County Environmental officer, Kevin Ojiem, one of the trainers shared his experience. “This training has been transformative. The knowledge and skills we have gained will not only enhance our work but also contribute to the county’s sustainable energy goals.”
The trained officers graduate from Turkana University College with certificate in the fundamental renewable energy (FRET) awarded by Dean of School of Science, Dr Peter Edome, in the presence of the University Deputy Principal for Administration, Finance and Planning Professor George Muthaa.
Dr Edome said that the university was ready to collaborate with the county government in a developing a framework for conducting and energy audit and development of corresponding county energy strategic plan.
The Director for Tourism, Abdul Lomuria, called for training for hoteliers as well on sustainable energy consumption patterns for a greener county.
The event was attended Jackson Lojore (Director for Energy), Geoffrey Eregae (Deputy Director for Energy), Lemmy Ejorewoia, Hosea Ameripus (Assistant Director for Administration) and officials from, Turkana University College, GIZ and County Government.
