The County Government of Turkana, in collaboration with the Kenya Red Cross, have joined forces to review the Disaster Risk Management Policy geared towards identifying gaps, weaknesses, and areas of improvement in the current policy framework, and to provide recommendations for preparedness, responses, and recovery efforts.

The two-day meeting was attended by the Turkana County Commissioner, Julius Kavita, and Chief Officer for Administration and Disaster Risk Management, David Maraka. The meeting brought together national and county government administrators.

During the meeting, Commissioner Kavita emphasized the importance of collaboration between the stakeholders to effectively address disaster risks in the County.

He stated, “Disaster risk management is a critical aspect of governance, and it is essential that we work together to ensure the safety and well-being of our communities.”

Chief Maraka highlighted the need for proactive measures to mitigate the impact of disasters.

“We must prioritize disaster risk management in our policies and plans to ensure we are fully prepared to respond effectively to any emergencies that may arise,”CCO Maraka remarked.

Such an effort is expected to result in the development of a comprehensive disaster risk management policy that will spearhead the resilience of the County to natural disasters and other emergencies.

The meeting consequently led to the commitment of all stakeholders to work together towards a safer and more secure future for Turkana County.
