TURKANA BEEKEEPERS TO ESTABLISH ADVOCACY BODY FOR SUSTAINABILITY

Turkana Beekeepers drawn from various sub-counties met to commence the formation of an umbrella body aimed to enhance advocacy for their interests and improve access to resources and training.

In a three-day workshop facilitated by World Food Program (WFP), the beekeepers and stakeholders also discussed ways of strengthening collaboration and resource sharing within the beekeeping sector.

Speaking during the workshop, Deputy Director of Livestock Production -Josephine Emase noted the importance of collaboration in beekeeping, which she said will assist navigate challenges in the beekeeping industry.

“Enhanced cooperation amongst all stakeholders through one umbrella body will realize improved productivity and profitability of the bee sector in the county,” she said.

WFP Program Officer, Phillip Mwaniki, said that the new organization of the beekeepers will also look to providing ongoing training, networking opportunities, and representation in policy discussions for the beekeepers to maximize their potential.

The workshop saw participants engaged in discussions about sustainable practices, market access, and the critical role of bees in agriculture and food security, as well as best practices and strategies to enhance productivity and sustainability.

It also sought to formalize the establishment of the umbrella body and put elaborate plans on the World Bee Day scheduled for 20th May 2025 to be held in Turkana County.

The umbrella body once established will strive to advance the collective goals of beekeepers towards a more sustainable and prosperous beekeeping future in the region.

The workshop was also attended by Director Shemmy Ebulon Ekuwom (Cooperatives) and Deputy Director Linus Ekidor (Youth Affairs), and officers from Livestock Production and Cooperative directorates. Partners representatives from WFP, Welthungerhilfe Kenya HivesGroup Limited and LOKADO.
