The Turkana County Department of Water Services has taken on 25 youths in a three-month attachment and volunteer program aimed at enhancing their skills in water provision.
According to Paul Lotum, the County Director for Water Services, the initiative is part of an ongoing effort to encourage young people in Turkana to pursue water-related courses while leveraging their expertise to improve service delivery in the sector.
“This program is designed to help you build capacity and gain expertise in water supply services, while developing the professional skills required in the sector,” Director Lotum said.
During a briefing with the volunteers and attaches, director Lotum emphasized the importance of discipline and a commitment to continuous learning, reminding participants that they were bound by public service rules.
“It is crucial for you to learn from your seniors and experienced staff. Let them guide you as you acquire the practical skills necessary for the job,” he added.
The program aligns with the county’s internship initiative, and Director Lotum encouraged all participants to apply for the internship program upon completing their attachment.
The head of Human Resource, Martin Emoru, echoed the need for self-discipline and adherence to HR rules as emphasized by the director, noting that the public service was an organized entity through which all professions could learn and grow.
The induction was also attended and addressed by the assistant director of water services, George Aremon and the assistant HR, Augustine Lochuch.
The group had individually applied to the water department for the opportunities, an important part of course requirement to qualify for graduation and eventual award of respective certification.
According to Director Lotum, the position remains non-remunerative and is meant to enhance skills of those pursuing programs in water related studies.
