Timothy Ekeno from Turkana County once again claimed victory in the annual Nomadic Disabled Persons Organization (NONDO) desert wheelchair race, held on October 12, 2024, in Isiolo.

Ekeno’s win marked his fifth consecutive title in the competition, solidifying his position as the most decorated athlete in NONDO’s history. His fellow Turkana athletes, Simon Lochor, William Ekai, and Simon Timoro, also performed admirably, securing 4th, 6th, and 12th place finishes, respectively.

For his outstanding achievement, Ekeno was awarded a cash prize of KSh 100,000 and a winner’s cup. The victory was celebrated by his team officials, led by Mark Amiyo, Director of Social Protection.

Turkana County has consistently participated in the NONDO wheelchair race since 2018, showcasing its commitment to supporting athletes with disabilities. The team’s strong performance in this year’s competition has raised hopes that they may clinch the overall title in the final days of the event.

Ekeno attributed his success to his extensive experience and rigorous training. He emphasized that the favorable conditions in Lodwar provided him with an ideal environment to hone his skills and prepare for major competitions.

Recognizing Ekeno’s exceptional talent, the National Council for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD) CEO has pledged to support his participation in upcoming national and international wheelchair races.

This year’s NONDO wheelchair race aimed to raise awareness about the importance of mass disability assessment for individuals with disabilities from nomadic communities. By highlighting the achievements of athletes like Ekeno, the event seeks to inspire and empower persons with disabilities to overcome challenges and pursue their dreams.
