Turkana County Government has held an engagement session with the Napusimoru community to discuss a proposed gypsum exploration project.
Located in Lokichar Ward of Turkana South sub-county, Napusimoru has significant gypsum deposits, a valuable mineral used in various industries.
County officials, investors, and community members attended the meeting to discuss the potential benefits of the project and the investor’s commitment to safety measures.
County Chief Officer for Energy, Minerals, and Petroleum Resources Triza Amoni emphasized the importance of community involvement in the exploration process. “We are here to involve the local community so that we can benefit together,” she said.
Amoni outlined potential benefits for local artisanal miners, including improved working conditions, fair wages, safety gear, and access to water.
The prospective investor, Abel Njoya, assured the community of his commitment to corporate social responsibility and job creation. “In the next four months, we are going to launch our CSR projects,” he said.
Speaking on behalf of the community, Sam Eroo expressed optimism about the project but emphasized the importance of adhering to the law and ensuring a win-win approach for both the community and the investor.
Gypsum is used in various applications, including wallboard, cement production, food additives, pharmaceuticals, medical devices, soil conditioning, and glassmaking.
The meeting was attended by senior county government officials and the investor’s team.
