A community in Kaaleng, Turkana County, has experienced a significant health transformation thanks to a restored borehole and elevated water tank, a collaborative effort between the Turkana County Government and USAID Nawiri.
For years, residents relied on a contaminated riverbed for water, exposing them to waterborne diseases, especially among children. The new water source has drastically improved the community’s health.
James Lomor, Chair of the Kaaleng Water Users Association, said, “With clean water, families no longer need water purifiers.”
Community Health Promoter Mercy Apetar noted a decline in diarrhea cases, attributing it to improved hygiene practices and clean water access.
In Nariodome village, Elizabeth Lojokio, a resident, praised the impact of a newly constructed toilet and access to clean water on her family’s health.
Joseph Lopeyon, a Community Health Promoter in Narionomoru, has also witnessed a reduction in diarrhea cases due to improved hygiene practices and clean water.
Nurse Titus Kiplagat from Kagitankori Dispensary observed a significant drop in diarrhea cases and improved maternity services due to better hygiene and water access.
Despite progress, challenges remain, especially in areas with limited access to water and sanitation services. Continued efforts are needed to improve access to clean water, promote hygiene, and address malnutrition in Turkana County.
