TURKANA COUNTY TAKES STEPS TO ENSURE SAFE WATER ACCESS

Kakuma, 6th November 2024 (Public Communications and Media Relations)

Turkana County Government, in partnership with the Millennium Water Alliance and USAID’s DRIP FUNDI program, has initiated a groundbreaking project to enhance water safety in the county.

The first installation of an in-line chlorination system at the Nakoyo borehole in Kakuma Ward marks a significant stride toward providing safe drinking water to the community. This simple yet effective technology, known as Klorman, releases chlorine into the water flow, ensuring that it meets water quality standards.

Emmanuel Echapan, Turkana West Sub-County Water Officer, highlighted the importance of this initiative in addressing waterborne diseases. “The automated chlorination system not only ensures safe drinking water but also complements previous county and partner efforts to improve water quality,” he said.

The DRIP FUNDI program, which aims to improve water access through remote monitoring and rapid response, is supporting the installation of in-line chlorination systems at seven additional boreholes across the county.

Experts in water services for domestic and industrial use fully recognize in-line chlorination as an efficient solution for both urban and rural water schemes, valued for its ease of installation, cost-effectiveness and easy operation and maintenance.

The use of technology along with community-based approaches, ensures that Turkana County Government is taking significant steps to ensure that its residents have access to safe and clean water, a fundamental human right.
