The County Executive Member for Education, Sports and Social Protection, Willyjustus Lopeyok Akwalata, has urged the management of county-owned Vocational Training Centres (VTCs) to implement student recruitment programs to boost enrolment and enhance the uptake of vocational education.
Speaking during a spot-check visit to VTCs in Turkana South and Turkana East, CECM Akwalata expressed concerns over the low enrolment rates, which have led to the underutilization of available facilities.
“As we encourage students to enrol in vocational courses such as ICT, motor vehicle engineering, garment making, electrical wiring, hairdressing, and catering, we expect institutional management to take the lead in marketing these programs to potential trainees,” he stated.
The CECM highlighted the county government’s significant investment in vocational education, including the provision of qualified instructors and modern training equipment, in alignment with the Governor’s transformative agenda for Turkana.
He further noted that the county is collaborating with development partners to continuously empower vocational instructors, ensuring they remain updated on emerging trends in modern education and industry requirements.
Mercy Ekaran, Manager, Lokori Vocational Training Centre, shared their intention to sensitize the public through county government administrative structures starting with village administrators. She also called on learners to take advantage of the available opportunities.
The CECM was accompanied by Chief Officers Paul Lodunga (Early Childhood and social protection) and Leah Nasuru Losiru
(Sports and Vocational Training) as well as directors from the education department during the inspection tour.
