The Turkana County government has expressed satisfaction with the progress of the first phase of the Kakali and Nakwamoru water projects following an inspection visit by the Financing Locally-Led Climate Action (FLLoCA) projects monitoring team.
Led by Deputy Director for Climate Change, Thomas Kiyonga, the team assessed ongoing works at the project sites, noting that the two water initiatives are among 32 community-identified projects across the county.
Kiyonga emphasized that FLLoCA, a World Bank-funded program, is currently supporting a total of 33 projects in Turkana, with contractors already on-site implementing 30.
“The public prioritized water projects during the identification stage to address domestic needs, agricultural production, and other uses,” Kiyonga stated.
He further outlined plans for the second phase, which will involve equipping the boreholes with solar-powered pumping systems, installing tap stands, constructing animal troughs, and developing a piping network to enhance distribution.
Located in Nakwamoru and Lokichar, the Kakali and Nawoitorong water projects are expected to transform the villages by supporting irrigation farming and improving access to clean water for residents.
“This project will significantly reduce the distances we have to walk to fetch water, improving life for everyone in our village,” said Selina Amekwi from Nakwamoru.
The inspection team included Assistant Director for Climate Change Jairus Napulo, Procurement Officer Peter Ikeny, and Accountant Ian Nawose.
