TURKANA SOCIAL PROTECTION POLICY ENTERS PUBLIC ENGAGEMENT PHASE

Kakuma, Feb 20th 2025 (Public Communications and Media Relations)

The push for a comprehensive Turkana County Social Protection Policy (TCSPP) has gained momentum as the county government conducted public engagements on the draft document.

The policy, which aims to streamline social protection interventions by establishing clear guidelines on leadership and management structures, funding models, monitoring and evaluation, and implementation frameworks-was submitted for public scrutiny at various locations across the county.

In Kakuma, County Executive for Education Willyjustus Lopeyok Akwalata explained that the policy was intentionally designed to enhance service delivery for persons with disabilities and other vulnerable groups.

“To develop this policy, the county has worked closely with the State Department for Social Protection, Labour and Senior Citizens Affairs and, UNICEF to ensure an inclusive framework,” said CEC Akwalata.

He assured the public that their views would be incorporated to further refine the document, reaffirming the county’s commitment to strengthening social protection programs under its mandate.

Director for Social Services Mark Amiyo emphasized the role of public participation in shaping the policy, noting that a similar engagement was planned at the county headquarters.

Director Amiyo also highlighted the document’s provision for partners involvement and commended key stakeholders, including UNICEF, for their continued support, urging more partners to join the initiative.

Members of the public welcomed the policy, with Epae William expressing satisfaction with its criteria for identifying beneficiaries, particularly the inclusion of elderly persons who are often overlooked in other social protection programs.

Another participant, John Ebei, lauded the recognition of persons with disabilities (PWDs), calling it a significant step toward improving their livelihoods and promoting access to support programs.
