About Kakuma
Situated in Turkana County in the country’s northwest, Kakuma Town is one of the major urban centres within Turkana County in the Turkana West Sub County with a population of 103,632 people, Figure 1. It is located on latitude 3.71680N and longitude 34.85690E at 580 metres above sea level. The town is approximately 120 kilometres from Kakuma Town, the County’s headquarters and approximately 95 kilometres to Lokichoggio and 135 kilometres to Nadapal Kenya-South Sudan border point. Kakuma is along the A1 highway connecting Lodwar to Juba in South Sudan.
Kakuma Refugee Camp is the second biggest and most well-known refugee camp in Kenya. It was set up in 1992 with the intention of housing Sudanese refugees escaping civil violence. It has expanded dramatically over time and is currently the residence of refugees from several East African nations as well as other countries.
